Research Funding

The Moredun Research Institute is internationally recognised for its work on the research of diseases which undermine biological efficiency, impair animal welfare or threaten public health; developing strategies for improved control and prevention of disease. The Institute maintains specialist diagnostic and disease surveillance services to facilitate epidemiological investigations and facilitate early awareness of emerging problems. The work is responsive to national needs and encourages best practice. It is also in the public interest.

The funding for these activities is derived from several sources. The major funder is the Scottish Government Rural and Environment Research and Analysis Directorate whose funding accounts for around 49% of total income. Undertaking research work for other funders and collaborators accounts for a further 30% of our income. In addition, the specialist Bioservices facilities and Diagnostic services generates a further 8% of our income with the balance coming from our parent charity, The Moredun Foundation, and other sources.

Expenditure is focused on delivering our internationally renowned research outputs and 76% of our costs cover our staffing resource and research consumables together with associated royalty payments, quality assurance and health and safety costs. A further 23 % of our expenditure is spent on our research facilities, utilities and depreciation with only 1% on administrative support and governance costs.
